James was raised in a small fishing town on the north Norfolk coast, and studied as an artist, before making his living as a commercial sign writer. Spending his evenings drawing and painting, one night he sketched out a simple drawing of four little penguins. These little guys were drawn in the same simplistic form he had always viewed them since he was a boy. A ball with feet and a beak! With a smile he drew another, then another and before he knew it he was putting paint to canvas and breathing life into something that was going to send his life in a whole new direction. Spurred on by friends and family, he started showing his work in a local gallery before heading to the streets of Norwich, where he turned disused shop fronts into temporary galleries ‘busking for artists’ as he called it. In 2013 he was honoured to be a finalist for the ‘Best selling up and coming artist’ at the Fine Art Trade Guild’s Art & Framing Awards.
