David McKee was born in Devon in 1935. After attending Plymouth Art College he worked as illustrator for periodicals and newspapers including Punch and The Times. His first children’s book was Two Can Toucan, first published in 1964 and still in print today. One of McKee’s most loved characters, Mr Benn first appeared in 1967 and was the subject of his first film series, produced by the BBC. Other immortal characters created by McKee include Elmer the Patchwork Elephant and King Rollo. These characters have become much-loved social icons and his stories have enchanted children over three generations. McKee currently resides in both London and the South of France.
